As you read this column, you will note that there are three deaths of nurses who served in the Army Nurse Corps during WWII. There are a number of nurse educators and many other areas of practice represented. Each is a special person who has impacted and influenced the lives of others. We honor the memory of each of them by sharing information about them with their peers/ colleagues/friends.

Dorothy Babcock, MS, CNS, RN Dorothy,age 76, died at home with her family on October 17, 2007. A well known and beloved nurse educator, Dorothy was a 1952 graduate of Misericordia Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia, PA who completed her BSN in 1956 at the University of Pennsylvania and her MSN at Catholic University of America in 1958. A Professor Emeritus of Nursing at Metropolitan State College, Denver where she taught for 16 years, she was also a clinical faculty member at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, the University Without Walls and Loretta Heights College. Not only was she one of the first Colorado nurses to become a Psychiatric Clinical Nurse Specialists, she was one of the first to also have a private practice in this role. In addition to articles, she authored one book plus co-authored two others including Client Education Theory and Practice which was selected as an AJN Book of the Year.

A Lifetime member of the Colorado Nurses Association, Dorothy was active in DNA-20. The next issue of the Colorado Nurse will include a more comprehensive memorial article about this special woman whose impact on the profession of nursing will live on through the many nurses whose lives she touched.

Bell, Quilla Dean Ph.D. Dr. Bell died at age 64 in Austin, TX. She received her BSN and her MSN (Maternal--Child Health) at the University of Oklahoma. In 1984, she completed her Ph.D at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Bell was an Assistant Professor at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, Denver School of Nursing. She was also on faculty at Idaho State University, Pocatello and Indiana State University at Terre Haute.

Berlinger, Maxine Maxine was born in Denver (1930) and died in Denver at the age of 77 on August 30, 2007. She attended Loretta Heights College, Denver and the University of Chicago where her career as a Maternal Child Health nurse began. She spent much of her career at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, Denver School of Nursing. During her 31 years there, she held many different positions including Chairperson of Maternal/Child Nursing, Acting Assistant Dean of Granduate Affairs, Assistant Dean of undergraduate programming, Coordinator of Student Affairs, and Director of Inpatient Services. In addition, she was an Associate Professor at the University of Hawaii and University of Manoa. She received many awards and influenced the lives of many nurses now in practice.

Bryant, Lanie Rene Lanie died on October 10, 2007. She was a Registered Nurse who, at age 24, was a head nurse at Parkland Hospital, Dallas, TX. She was also a minister.

Davis, Margie Fern Snowden Mrs. Davis died at age 89 in July 2007. She graduated from Parkland Hospital School of Nursing, Dallas, TX. She also earned a BSN (Nursing Education and a Certificate in Public Health Nursing) from George Peabody College in Nashville, TN. She later completed a Certificate in Physical Therapy at Stanford University. Much of her career involved her work in Nursing Homes. She and her husband purchased a nursing home in Denver in 1955; during the next 33 years, they expanded it from 32 to 237 beds. Her work in many organizations included serving on the committee which wrote the first nursing home standard in Colorado. She was one of the first members of the American College of Nursing Home administrators.

Giles, Marian L. Aikens died in Aurora CO (age 84) on August 26, 2007. She served in the Army Nurse Corps in WWII.

Graves, Norene M. Died Sptember 9, 2007 in Arvada, CO (where she had graduated from High School in 1939) at age 86. A graduate of St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing in Denver, she served as a First Lieutenant, Army Nurse Corps in WWII.

Grunfeld, Carol Ann Campbell Ph.D. Dr. Grunfeld was 59 at her death, in Denver, in October 2007. She was a child advocate and medical ethicist. She championed the concept of maternal child care in the home and the innovator, then Director of Kaiser Permanente' s Perinatal Homecare Program (1980-2006).

Herlevich, Dorothy Baskos Mrs. Herlevich died in Westminister, CO on 8-4-07 at the age of 82. A graduate of St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing (1946) she was a longtime employee of the Longmont Hospital and Clinic.

Hodgkin, Charles D. Mr. Hodgkin died in Hot Springs AR on 2-23-07 at to age of 64. A graduate of Bryan School of Nursing, Lincoln NE and the Fitzsimmons School of Anesthesia, Aurora, CO, he was employed at Rose Medical Center from 1975-1991. He later worked as a "Locum Tenens CRNA" from 1991 until his death.

Linam, Betty Gamboa died at age 66 in Pueblo, Colorado. Betty was a graduate of Holy Cross School of Nursing in Salt Lake City, Utah. She later earned her BSN from the University of Phoenix. She was one of the earliest dialysis nurses in the region and was working in home health care at her retirement. Date of death was May 20, 2007.
