U.S. INTERNATIONAL TRANSACTIONS
In the third quarter of 2002, the goods deficit rose to $123.2
billion, from $122.5 billion in the second quarter. The current
account deficit fell to $127.0 billion in the third quarter,
from $127.6 billion in the second quarter. In the financial account,
U.S. claims on foreigners reported by U.S. banks decreased $46.4
billion in the third quarter of 2002, in contrast to an increase of
$68.7 billion in the second quarter. U.S. liabilities to private
foreigners reported by U.S. banks, excluding Treasury securities,
increased $8.3 billion in the third quarter, following an increase of
$32.2 billion in the second quarter.
