Creating awareness among the staff

Today's Manager, Dec-Jan, 2008 by Yeo Chay Mui, Josephine Yee, N. Pusphavalli, Sandy Ng Choon Ean, Koh Leong Chian, Shanon Moey

Christopher's 24-hour dismissal as a consequence of his one-way borrowing habits was not rightly handled by Electrode Inc. Such short dismissal notice is only seen in severe cases such as embezzling company's funds. Appropriate action before resolving the matter could have been taken. This would show that the HR department was aware of his bad habit and has attempted to assist employees to solve their problems.

KK Ong's intervention only when Colleen became a victim was wrong and showed favouritism. If he had objectively intervened and brought this matter to HR department rather than reporting to the managing director, he could have prevented more staff from being conned by Christopher.

Making social illness seminars compulsory would create more awareness among employees, and possibly improve the ethics of the staff. Similar compulsory seminars could be conducted annually as a refresher course for employees. Moreover, the heads of departments and HR managers should attend counselling courses as part of their education on how to better manage similar employee problems or conflicts that may arise.--Contributed by Yeo Chay Mui, Josephine Yee, N Pusphavalli, Sandy Ng Choon Ean, Koh Leong Chian, and Shanon Moey
