Mary of the media - poem

Cross Currents, Winter, 1998 by Nancy G. Westerfield

The College of St. Mary this morning names

Its newest campus-Gothic in her honor:

Taking place beneath her lowered gaze

From the library lintel, the dedication speech

Lauds learning, quotes the classics, quotes

From Scripture - nothing that Mary every wrote.

Her image on the lintel does not hold

Stylus or scroll, like a Matthew, Mark,

Luke, John, but only offers blessing

On all who seek her information center,

All who read as the world's computers run.

She herself depended for her news on angels,

For word about the world, on her son.
