Hate Crimes - Bulletin Reports - Addressing Hate Crimes: Six Initiatives That Are Enhancing the Efforts of Criminal Justice Practitioners - Brief Article

FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin,The, Jan, 2002

Addressing Hate Crimes. Six Initiatives That Are Enhancing the Efforts of Criminal Justice Practitioners, prepared by Stephen Wessler, identifies projects that support police and prosecutorial agencies in responding to hate crimes. Police officers generally are the first professionals responding to the scene of a hate crime.

Therefore, to successfully carry out their roles, police officers and prosecutors must receive training on recognizing and investigating potential hate crimes, have clear protocols on how to respond to hate violence, and develop innovative programs for preventing and responding to hate crimes. This Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) monograph highlights six BJA-funded projects that demonstrate the creativity and deep commitment of local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies in leading the nation's effort to combat bias-motivated crime. The document supplies sources for additional information as well. To obtain a copy of this monograph (NCJ 179559), contact the National Criminal Ju stice Reference Service at 800-851-3420 or access its Web site at http.//www.ncjrs.org.
