Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture. New Testament VIII: Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians

Contemporary Review, Nov, 1999

Mark J. Edwards, editor. Fitzroy Dearborn Publishers. [pounds]30.00. 322 pages. ISBN 157058-070-X. This volume is the latest in Fitzroy Dearborn's massive, twenty-seven volume series whose aim is to provide Bible students and theologians with a reliable collection of writings on the Bible by the early church fathers.

This particular volume is devoted to three of St Paul's most important letters and we have here in translation the words of Jerome, Origen, Augustine, John Chrysostom, Theodoret, Marius Victorinus and Theodore of Mopsuestia. After almost 1700 years it is remarkably refreshing to read what scholars and churchmen saw in the Scriptures when what they read was new to them. After the quotation from scripture there is a summary of the comments to follow and then the patristic comments. In addition there are copious footnotes to lead researchers on to fuller discussions, a chronology, three indices and a useful glossary. This volume meets in full the exacting standard set by the series as a whole.
