The Daily Telegraph: Fifth Book of Obituaries. 20th-Century Lives. - Review - book review
Contemporary Review, August, 2000
Hugh Massingberd, editor. Macmillan. [pounds]16.99. 505 pages. ISBN 0-333-74000-9. The Daily Telegraph's obituary page has become famous for having well rounded obituaries while the series in which this is published has become something of a 'British institution'. Previous volumes were concerned with: eccentric lives, heroes and adventurers, entertainers, and rogues.
In this final volume we have something of a potpourri with 100 mini-biographies covering almost every section of recent British (and some non-British) domestic and imperial history. Royalty (including an American Indian 'princess'), scientists, discoverers, adventurers, architects, peers, industrialists, writers, artists and composers. This volume is as pleasing as its predecessors and will give much pleasure to those fortunate enough to own a copy. (E.B.)
