Independence Years: The Selected Indian and Commonwealth Papers of Nicholas Mansergh. - Review - book review
Contemporary Review, Oct, 2000
Diana Mansergh, editor. Oxford University Press, New Delhi. [pound]15.99/495 Rupees. 274 pages. ISBN 0199564847-1. Nicholas Mansergh (1910-1991) is perhaps best remembered for his work on Irish history but he also wrote extensively on India and the British Commonwealth. He visited India and taught there.
He also published numerous articles, many in Contemporary Review, on Indian affairs. He wished to have these collected into one volume but died before he could do so. His widow has gathered these essays together as a tribute to a great scholar. She has divided them into five sections: Independence; The Transfer of Power with Partition-Commonwealth Membership; The Commonwealth in Asia; Reappraisals (on Nehru and Indira Gandhi); Retrospect (on the partition of India and on relations between India and Pakistan); and, finally, an epilogue concerned with India in the 1950s. There is still a freshness about these essays which bri ngs the history of these tumultuous years vividly back to life. Their publication is a valuable addition to our historical understanding of the Commonwealth and those who, like Nicholas Mansergh, served it so loyally. (J.M.)
