Bellow: A Biography. James Atlas. Faber and Faber. [pound]25.00. 686 pages. ISBN 0-571-14356-3. This life of the American novelist, Saul Bellow, was first published in the U.S. by Random House in 2000. In this biography the author tells us all we need to know about Bellow and a great deal beside.
It is always dangerous to write biographies of living subjects and one senses the difficulties in this text. However the author was part of the same New York Jewish intellectual world inhabited by his subject and this gave him insights and background knowledge. By the end of the exercise, however, the biographer had won his subject's acceptance: 'He saw me at regular intervals, provided access to documents, offered me tea and dinner, and...never interfered in what I wrote'.
