The Selected Letters of Bertrand Russell: The Public Years, 1914-1970 - Review
Contemporary Review, Oct, 2001
The Selected Letters of Bertrand Russell: The Public Years, 1914-1970. Nicholas Griffin, editor. Routledge. [pound]25.00. 660 pages. ISBN 0-415-24998-8. The editor, who is Director of the Bertrand Russell Research Centre in Ontario's McMaster University, has also worked as general editor of Russell's Collected Papers, also published by Routledge.
He has shown his unique knowledge of Russell in the first volume of Selected Letters and here, once again, he draws on it to give us a de facto biography in the form of letters. Of the 628 letters reproduced here only four have been published in their entirety before. The editor's task has not been an easy one, given the volume of Russell's correspondence and the variety of his interests, opinions and prejudices. Prof Griffin has preferred 'depth' to 'breadth' and therefore excludes certain topics such as the campaign for world government organisations, the Indo-Pakistani border dispute, religion and 'technical letters about philosophy'. Also, letters in the Russell Papers to his third wife, his son, his daughter and his grandchildren have been excluded under the terms of the sale to McMaster. (Letters to Russell's daughter appear only when she gave them to the University.) The editor provides helpful linking material to help readers the better to understand the letters.
