The Metaphysical Poets. . - Reviews - book review

Contemporary Review,  March, 2002

The Metaphysical Poets. David Reid. Longman. [pounds sterling]16.99 p.b. 293 pages. ISBN 0-582-29835-0. This book looks at the poetry of John Donne, George Herbert, Richard Crashaw, Henry Vaughan, Andrew Marvell and Thomas Traherne. The author suggests that the book's sub-title could be 'Six Studies in Seventeenth-Century Interiority' because 'an interest in oneself is a limited thing of course, but it is these poets' interest in themselves that makes them matter to us'.

This 'interiority' was typically expressed in devotional and love poems which made up the bulk of their output. The text looks at each poet in turn and each chapter is prefaced with a biographical and historical introduction followed by an analysis of that poet's work with particular attention to one poem. The book is designed to be an 'introduction to the study of Metaphysical poets' and seeks to help readers 'to get the hang of poems and enjoy them'.
