On Cosmopolitanism and Forgiveness. . - Reviews - book review

Contemporary Review,  June, 2002

On Cosmopolitanism and Forgiveness. Jacques Derrida. Mark Dooley and Michael Hughes, translators. Routledge. [pounds sterling]30.00. 60 pages. ISBN 0-415-22711-9. This reissue of these two famous essays by the French philosopher, which he first published in 1977, is part of Routledge's 'Thinking in Action' series.

The two are introduced by Simon Critchley and Richard Kearney who provide a Preface and useful notes. In the essay, 'On Cosmopolitanism' Derrida discusses the problems Europe and Britain face by the current tide of immigrants. In the second, 'On Forgiveness he tackles the ethical problem of forgiving the seemingly unforgivable, in particular, acts of historic importance. As a Frenchman he naturally thinks of recent French history including Algeria, the enthusiastic collaboration of the Vichy Regime after 1940 and the distortion of French history and politics to which this has led. He widens his horizon to include the Apartheid era in South Africa.
