Contemporary Review, Dec, 2002
From two of London's smaller publishing houses we have a variety of works translated from the French. From PUSHKIN PRESS we have the first English translation (by Euan Cameron) of Julian Green's novella, The Other Sleep ([pounds sterling]10.00 p.b.) first published in 1931. This edition also has an Afterword by the author, written in 1974.
Pushkin Press has also added two new titles to its library of books on Venice: Paul Morand's Venices ([pounds sterling]12.00 p.b.) (again translated by Euan Cameron), a charming autobiography set against the city that has intrigued visitors for centuries, and Regis Debray's Against Venice ([pounds sterling]9.00) which is translated by John Howe. This gives a rather different view from an author with a love-hate relationship with Venice. Both tides are very attractively presented. From HEARING EYE (Box 1, 99, Torriano Avenue, London, NW5 2RX) we have two paperback originals. The first is Elsa Triolet's 1939 biography, Mayakovsky: Russian Poet, translated by Susan de Muth. Th is memoir of the Russian futurist poet was written nine years after his suicide. The second is Poems from How to Be a Grandfather by Victor Hugo and translated by Timothy Ades. These poems, many of which were written during Hugo's exile in Guernsey, were among the last works he composed and many have never before appeared in English. Both are priced at [pounds sterling]8.95.
