Contemporary Review, Dec, 2002
OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS has brought out paperback editions of two new titles in its New Oxford History of England: Robert Bartlett's England under the Norman and Angevin Kings 1075-1225 ([pounds sterling]14.99), a fresh and refreshing look at this formative period in our island story, and Julian Hoppit's A Land of Liberty? England 1689-1727 ([pounds sterling]14.99) which traces the important changes introduced by the Glorious Revolution and then by the Hanoverian Settlement.
The third title, actually from the CLARENDON PRESS, is The British Isles and the War of American Independence ([pounds sterling]18.99) by Stephen Conway. This widely researched and informative survey looks at the rebellion's effects not on life in the colonies but on life in Great Britain, from political debate to society and religion as seen in the 1778 Catholic Relief Act and the Gordon Riots.
