English Shops and Shopping

Contemporary Review,  June, 2004

English Shops and Shopping: An Architectural History. Kathryn A. Morrison. Yale University Press. [pounds sterling]30.00. viii + 343 pages. ISBN 0-300-10219-4. This magnificent historical guide is based on a survey of retail buildings begun in 1998 by the former Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England (now English Heritage) and on the author's own sixteen months of field-work.

In this beautifully illustrated survey Miss Morrison gives us the history of English shopping, from the mediaeval pedlars, annual fairs, market stalls and, from the 1400s, shops, to the eighteenth century High Street, the Victorian arcade and department store and the twentieth century's American-inspired ring road shopping centre. With a wealth of information she traces means of shopping, from barter, payment and credit in the middle ages to credit cards in the twenty-first, describes what people bought and when, shows how buildings and shopping affected one another and traces how both were part of changing social customs and architectural innovations. The bulk of the text is concerned with the period 1750 to the present and in particular, to the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This is a marvellous achievement in which research, writing and illustrations all combine to give readers insights into a vital aspect of our history. (R.J.D.)
