Mussolini

Contemporary Review,  July, 2004

Mussolini. Peter Neville. Routledge. [pounds sterling]9.99 p.b. xiv + 237 pages. ISBN 0-415-24990-2. This short biography, part of Routledge's Historical Biographies series, rejects the view of Mussolini as a 'cynical opportunist obsessed only with personal power'. His Fascist Party did have a vision of a Fascist society.

His tragedy was to enter the war in 1940 as this brought out the worst in Fascism and led to his regime's collapse. The author concentrates on the Duce's politics, asks what really drove him and assesses the sincerity of his political opinions. He was politically astute as seen in his creation of the Fascist party and 'his regime might have survived had not Mussolini chained himself to the German alliance'. Mr Neville argues that there was nothing inevitable in Mussolini's career and that it was shaped by events. Whilst his conquest of Ethiopia was popular with the Italians, his foreign policy in general was a disaster. This is a challenging study even if one does not share the author's left-wing views.
