Pepys's Later Diaries

Contemporary Review,  Jan, 2005

Pepys's Later Diaries. C.S. Knighton, editor. Sutton Publishing. [pounds sterling]20.00. xxiv + 232 pages. ISBN 0-7509-3656-8. Although Pepys stopped keeping his diary in May 1669 he did keep diary notes about special events in his life. This valuable collection includes 'the five most cohesive of these texts, presented as far as possible in a uniform style'.

Of the five, two have been printed before and these are included with some parts omitted; three are taken from the Pepys manuscripts. Two of these latter concern his problems during the Popish Plot (when he was accused of treason) and one is concerned with the commission set up to reform the Navy, 'the culminating achievement of Pepys's professional life'. The editor, an expert in all matters Pepysian, has written a valuable 'general introduction' and the editorial matter is of the high standard one has come to expect from this scholar. (R.F.T.)
