The Kingdom of Ireland, 1641-1760. Toby Barnard. Palgrave Macmillan. [pounds sterling]17.99 p.b. vi + 205 pages. ISBN 0-333-61077-6. This volume in Palgrave's British History in Perspective series, seeks to explain how in this 119-year period the government and land-holding pattern of Ireland was changed from Catholic to Protestant.
Having explained how this was done it examines the pattern of the new administration of power, the effect it had on life in Ireland and the limitations placed on the new dispensation. The author wisely extends his coverage to the exercise of power in the countryside and not just in Dublin, thereby giving readers the wider view that is necessary to understand fully the impact these changes would have on future events and attitudes in Ireland. The 'Ascendancy' was, by 1760, well established but remained fragile and this fragility led to the system's dismantling by the Act of Union. The account is succinctly written and founded on good work. (R.R.H.T.)
