Tail-End Charlies: The Last Battles of the Bomber War 1944-45. John Nichol and Tony Rennell. Viking. [pounds sterling]18.99. xxiii + 470 pages. ISBN 0-670-91456-8. This title is by the same two authors who wrote The Last Escape, a deeply moving history of the plight of Allied pow's in the final days of the Third Reich.
This book is concerned with the work of the rear-gunner on the bombers that flew over Germany, men referred to in the RAF as 'rail-end Charlies'. It is also concerned with the last seventeen months of the war and of the role of the RAF and the USAAF's bombing missions in achieving victory. Our views of this period have been blurred by the fire-bombing of Dresden and Hamburg and the brave men of Bomber Command have accordingly suffered in public esteem. This book seeks to put that right and to pay tribute to the 50,000 Empire troops which did not return. It is based on a mastery of histories of the period and on the reminiscences of survivors. It is, in its way, a moving story of warfare in the air as seen through the eyes of those involved and a fitting tribute to these men's bravery and to those who did not return. (T.B.)
