Christianity: A Very Short Introduction
Contemporary Review, May, 2005
Christianity: A Very Short Introduction. Linda Woodhead. Oxford University Press. [pounds sterling]6.99. vi + 168 pages. ISBN 0-19-280322-0. To introduce the Christian religion in 168 pages is a sizable undertaking. Miss Woodhead does so by devoting her first two chapters to Jesus and to how He was seen and then to the development of 'Christian ritual and symbolic universe'.
The third chapter is concerned with the development of Christianity from the fourth century to the Protestant Reformation. The fourth chapter looks at the role of mysticism in Christianity while the fifth examines Christianity in 'the west' as it came to terms with post-Reformation modernism. The sixth chapter looks at the Orthodox Church and at Christianity in Africa, Asia and South America whilst the final chapter examines the roles of men and women in Christianity without too much feminist imput. Miss Woodhead also adopts the silly American import--'BCE' for B.C. and 'CE' for A.D.--without damaging an essentially balanced approach. (J.M.)
