Rome
Contemporary Review, July, 2005
Rome. Elizabeth Speller. Granta Books. [pounds sterling]9.99 p.b. xxi + 266 pages. ISBN 1-86207-744-4. This is the second title in Granta's new series of City Guides by this author. For her, Rome 'basks in a certain fading, flaking, and ultimately finely calculated neglect'. It is a city crammed with and built upon layers of history and it is a city with numerous guides already in existence.
This particular guide is designed to 'provide some lesser known information about the great sights and to tempt visitors towards some of Rome's many hidden delights'. She settles for ten tours or 'walks', each of which seeks to 'recreate Rome as it is experienced by anybody discovering it for the first time'. Each walk mixes together famous sites with scenes of everyday life. Miss Speller also provides information about museums, galleries, public transport, hotels and restaurants and gives readers good advice: the best way to cross a wide street in Rome is to 'find a nun and cross beside her'. This is a delightful guide both for the first-time visitor and for those who know Rome but want to know her better. (J.M.)
