The collection of fourteen essays that follow is divided into four parts. The first looks at 'Elgar the Man' with four papers on Elgar as a historical personality, Elgar's biography and reputation, Diana McVeagh's 1955 biography discussed by herself, and Elgar the Catholic. The second part has five essays which look at Elgar in manuscript, Elgar as a composer, Elgar as a 'progressive', Elgar's church music and finally, Anthony Payne on his work on Elgar's sixth Pomp and Circumstance March. The third section has five papers on 'Performing Elgar': 'conducting Elgar' by Mark Elder, the role of the Angel in The Dream of Gerontius by Dame Janet Baker, the late Lord Menuhin on Elgar as 'my musical grandfather', Tasmin Little on the violin concerto and Andrew Keener on Jacqueline du Pre's recordings of the cello concerto. The final section, The Legacy, has one paper by Michael Messenger on The Elgar Foundation and the Birthplace Museum. (M.W.)
