Out of the Storm: The Life and Legacy of Martin Luther
Contemporary Review, Spring, 2008
Out of the Storm: The Life and Legacy of Martin Luther. Derek Wilson. Hutchinson. [pounds sterling]20.00. xv + 399 pages. ISBN 978-0-09-180001-7. The author sees Luther as 'one of those rare individuals who single-handedly forced the march of time into a new direction'. His aim is to give general readers a full assessment of the man and of his impact on history for a post-Christian society.
Luther was a 'man of total conviction who had the courage to follow his beliefs wherever they led'. (One could of course say the same for Stalin or Hitler.) His reference to 'the tyranny of the sacramental system' implies a latent hostility to Catholicism and a peculiar view of the Sacraments. His assertion that after Luther the 'Holy Roman Empire was henceforth a title without substance' is far from the mark. He also asserts that 'the Bible' can be seen apart from the Church out of which it grew and for which its writings were collected. Ultimately Luther did not 'reform' but destroy in order to create anew. Mr Wilson takes readers somewhat toward a fuller understanding of Luther but the full picture is not here. (E.B.)
