St. Mewan church bells
Contemporary Review, May, 1995 by A.L. Rowse
Then over the hill came the bells of St. Mewan Very far and faint, but clear, Calling the faithful to evensong Now Whitsuntide was here.
The long grass brushed our childhood legs, We gathered flowers as we went; Mother and father brought up the rear, No-one spoke, on bluebells bent.
But the surf of sound from far away Opened a way into my heart, Some message I could not perceive - A child, yet set apart.
It was the one time I remember When all the family moved as one, Under that spell - magic moment! Who all, with the years, are gone.
