Promoting Equality in Secondary Schools - Book Review

Adolescence, Fall, 2002

HILL, Dave, & COLE, Mike (Eds.). Promoting Equality in Secondary Schools. New York: Cassell, 1999. 352pp. $28.95 (p).

Written by specialists in the field from schools and institutes of higher education, this book examines each National Curriculum subject, analyzes it in terms of culture and ideology and gives detailed suggestions on how to promote equality and equal opportunities within it. The book is unusual as it adopts a holistic perspective, inter-relating the various inequalities in a way which enables teachers and others to learn from existing anti-racist and anti-sexist practice and to apply this to other areas of inequality. Each chapter is wide-ranging and includes both theoretical and practical issues. The book also provides detailed lists of relevant curricular resources and their suppliers.
