This book gives university students and educationalists in Germany, as well as Anglo-American countries, an overview of the history of educational science in Germany, along with current theoretical debates and important fields of research. Institutional conditions, theoretic paradigms and approaches, and the main focuses of German educational science are outlined in the introduction. Part 1 traces the development of pedagogic thinking since the Age of Enlightenment in connection with the history of modernization of the educational system in Germany. It also provides an introduction to the theoretical development of critical educational science. Part 2 outlines important fields of research within educational science, including historical lines of development, basics of methodology, fields of research, outcomes and prospects of qualitative educational research, as well as biographical research.
