In memory of Bernie Zilbergeld 1939-2002 - Obituary

Journal of Sex Research, Nov, 2002 by Carol Rinkleib Ellison

Bernie Zilbergeld was a paradoxical man. Alex Weiss, my life partner of the last 17 years, describes him this way:

The B. Z. that I knew had many sides to him ... He was ambitious, often
self-serving, obstinate and difficult ... But B. could also be a very
likeable man. He had a keen intelligence, a sharp sense of humor, and could
be, and was often, very caring, helpful, and generous. And his work was
often brilliant. His research, his practice, his books were innovative,
creative, challenging, and inspiring to others. And his teaching and
mentoring contributed greatly to many working in the field of human
sexuality. Though B. had his flaws--as so do we all--he did a great deal of
good. He made some things better in this world.

I believe the best that can be said of any man or woman is that they did
some good in this world before they left it. And it can certainly be said
   of Bernie Zilbergeld.

Bernie is survived by his daughter, Claire Zilbergeld, of San Francisco; his partner, Marilyn Greene, and Ian Cox, whom he regarded as a son, both of the San Francisco Bay Area; his brother, George Zilbergeld, of New Jersey; and his sister, Hannah Gordon, and step-brother, Steve Stegman, both of New York.

A memorial service was held September 8, 2002, on the UC Berkeley campus. Memorial contributions can be made to the Foundation for Scientific Study of Sexuality (FSSS).
