"What is called Heaven": identity in Sandra Cisneros's 'Woman Hollering Creek.'

Studies in Short Fiction, Summer, 1994 by Jeff Thomson

(1) Cisneros sets up a very traditional paradigm her (a maturing, evolving consciousness is the model for Joyce's Dubliners), yet her focus is distinct: the marginalized position of an individual and a culture outside the mainstream. (2) Saldivar is speaking here specifically of The House On Mango Street, but the pattern he notes applies equally to Woman Hollering Creek.
