Inevitably the book is a bit of a mixture, varying from detailed accounts of current research in Alzheimer's disease to practical issues in the neurological history and examination of very elderly people. In practice the mixture holds together like a good fruit cake, with lots of tasty and exciting components.

The editors have tried to maintain the link between background information and clinical practice throughout the book. Alzheimer's disease receives particular emphasis in terms of our scientific understanding of the disease, its diagnosis and management. |Problem-orientated' chapters include those on delirium, falls and gait, transient loss of consciousness and urinary incontinence. Some of the comments on management and the chapter on ethical issues reflect the American medical, social and legal context, but are none the less thought provoking and relevant to all of us.

The book has an admirable consistency of style and is very readable. It is a reference work into which many will |tuck in'; they will enjoy it and be enriched.
