Bush To Push Arctic Drilling - George W. Bush - Brief Article

Ecologist, The,  March, 2001

President Bush intends to move swiftly to implement his new 'national energy policy', which will open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil and natural gas drilling. 'We'll push ahead to develop 8 per cent of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge,' said An Fleischer, White House spokesperson, referring to the 1.5m-acre coastal plain between Alaska and Yukon.

The drilling is fiercely opposed by environmentalists, and David Anderson, Canada's minister for the environment, has also expressed his opposition. However, Canada will be reluctant to jeopardise its relationship with the new administration over this matter. Email President Bush on www.savearcticrefuge.org urging him not to open the refuge to oil and gas drilling.
