The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation has awarded $550,000 in grants to 22 local media centers and national media organizations. The awards were made to media centers in 11 states for film and video projects in three categories: those that foster community engagement; those that serve and involve children and youth; and those that stimulate community discussion about issues related to welfare, workforce development and economic opportunity.
911 Media Arts Center, Seattle, WA

In support of "Reel Grrls," an after-school program in which 20 diverse teenage girls will work with professional media artists to create videos about images of young women in mainstream media. 911 has been awarded a total of $162,000 by the MacArthur Foundation since 1987.
American Indian Film Institute, San Francisco, CA

In support of a pilot project, the Tribal Touring Program, which will tour a condensed version of the American Indian Film Festival, with presentations by media artists and media production workshops for youth, to Indians living in rural and tribal communities in California, This is the Foundation's first grant to the American Indian Film Institute.

In continued support for a project with the Kentucky Economic Justice Alliance to increase the participation of grassroots citizens groups and progressive organizations in discussions about economic justice and welfare reform. Since 1987, $461,000 has been awarded to Appalshop under this grantmaking program.
Bay Area Video Coalition, San Francisco, CA

In support of the Artist Equipment Access Program which will assist artists in the completion of community-based work using video and to provide a context and forum for discussion and active engagement with these works through extensive outreach and audience-building activities. Bay Area Video Coalition has been awarded $350,000 since 1986.
Children's Media Project, Poughkeepsie, NY

In renewed support for "TALKING WALLS: Transformation from the Inside Out," a project that teaches documentary video production and media literacy skills to at-risk youth in Dutchess County, New York. Children's Media Project was awarded $20,000 last year.
Community Film Workshop of Chicago, IL

In renewed support for an after school media arts, technology and peer leadership program and an expansion of the program to include the Englewood and Grand Crossing neighborhoods of Chicago. Since 1987, the Community Film Workshop has been awarded $120,000 by the Foundation.
Deep Dish T.V. Network, New York, NY
$25,000
For a media activist project incorporating video production training for students, a national media activist television series and a town hall meeting on prison reform, which will be distributed on cable and the Internet. Deep Dish T.V. Network has received $310,000 from the MacArthur Foundation since 1990.
Downtown Community Television Center, New York, NY
$25,000
For a project to add a webcasting component to media training programs serving high school students, homeless youth and physically and mentally disabled individuals, culminating in a series of interactive Community Cybercasts. Under this grant-making program, Downtown Community Television Center has been awarded $450,000 since 1986.
Educational Video Center, New York, NY

In renewed support for the Youth Organizers TV Youth Watch Human Rights project, which engages inner-city teenagers in documenting the experiences of youth in the criminal justice system and exploring alternatives to incarceration. Since 1993, Educational Video Center has been awarded $160,000 by the Foundation.

In renewed support for "Urban Voices," a media production training program for young people. Last year, Global Action Project was awarded $25,000.
Haleakala/The Kitchen, New York, NY
$20,000
In support of "The Mural Project," a community initiative that will include video, documentation, writing and spoken word workshops for youths, as well as video installations, exhibitions and performance activities. Since 1987, Haleakala has been awarded $32,500 under the Program in Support of Media Centers.
IMAGE Film & Video Center, Atlanta, GA

For a project to provide inner-city youth with training in computer technology and video production for use in creative expression and to provide general workplace experience to prepare them for careers. IMAGE Film & Video Center has been awarded $100,000 since 1986.
Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum, WRTE - Radio Arte, Chicago, IL
$25,000
In renewed support for "Youth Metro," a radio program broadcast over the Internet and produced by young people from the Little Village/Pilsen community. The young producers are trained in website development, audio art and experimental radio production. The Foundation has awarded $2,017,500 to the Mexican Fine Arts, Center Museum since 1986.
New Orleans Video Access Center, New Orleans, LA
$25,000
In renewed support of "New Orleans: One City, Many Voices," a collaboration with independent producers, educational institutions and social justice organizations to produce and screen a series of videos, New Orleans: One City, Many Voices, about individuality, identity and social relationships. Since 1988, the New Orleans Video Access Center has been awarded $135,000.
