American Music Teacher, August-Sept, 2002
The Indiana University School of Music at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) is helping music teachers and musicians stay in step with changes in technology through the world's only music degree offered completely online to students anywhere in the world.
The school's master's of music in music technology degree, now in its second year online, familiarizes students with the broad range of latest technologies in music. They learn how to use computer-based tools for music composition and arranging, music recording and multimedia production. Students in the program meet online for class at the same time each week and see a live broadcast of the professor lecturing to students in the on-campus program.
"Currently, there is a big push around the state for music educators to know more about music technology," said Fred Rees, director of the program. "Most of the online students are music teachers for whom this kind of instruction, which is offered in the evenings during the school year, is necessary. They either live too far away from universities with graduate music programs, have families or full-time jobs, or any combination of these limitations."
