South Central
American Music Teacher, August-Sept, 2005 by Ruth Pitts
Guest artists and presenters at the Arkansas MTA State Conference were excellent, as were the student winners of the ASMTA State Student Auditions. Jeanne Hurst was named "ASMTA Independent Teacher of the Year." A pinning ceremony for newly MTNA certified members was initiated. Special thanks to Ann Rye, retiring MTNA state senior competitions chair; John Krebs is the new chair. Mark Smidt is the new ASMTA newsletter editor.
In addition to its upcoming state convention at Loyola University in New Orleans, October 27-28, Louisiana MTA will be hosting the MTNA South Central Division performance competitions at the University of Louisiana in Lafayette, Louisiana, January 14-15, 2006; on-site coordinator is Susanna Garcia.
Oklahoma MTA held its annual conference at Oklahoma Christian University in Edmund, Oklahoma, June 3-4. A highlight was the premier of 2005 Commissioned Composer Skye Garcia's Prairie Suite, a work about Oklahoma for two pianos, four hands. To encourage and motivate young composers in their state, OMTA has appointed a committee to plan a new state composition festival.
MTNA President Paul Stewart attended the Texas MTA convention. Convention highlights included a youth orchestra featuring Texas MTA performance competition winners, a recital of student composition winners, seven student concerts featuring 10-piano ensembles, state performance competitions, clinics for chamber music, guitar and composition, and the 2005 Commissioned Composer and New Collegiate Faculty concert.
