BMI Student Composer Award winners announced - Items of Interest - Broadcast Music Incorporated - Brief Article

Previous MTNA National Competition winner Sebastian Chang, age 14, is one of nine 2002 BMI Student Composer Award winners. This award recognizes superior creative talent, and winners receive scholarship grants to be applied toward their musical education. Cash awards totaled $20,000. More than 700 manuscripts were submitted to the competition from throughout the Western Hemisphere.

Chang, who studies privately in Orange County, California, also received a Carlos Surinach Prize, which is underwritten by the BMI Foundation's special endowed fund. Chang resides in Trabuco Canyon, California, and attends the Orange County High School of the Arts in Santa Ana. He has won numerous prizes, including first place in the 2000 and 2002 MTNA National Student Composition Competition as a student of Suzanne Wong-Abe.
