The Jupiter String Quartet received the Grand Prize at the 2004 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, held at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. The quartet received $8,000 and a winner's tour with performances at the Emilia Romagna Festival in Italy.

The quartet, which includes members Nelson Lee, Meg Freivogel, violins; Liz Freivogel, viola; and Daniel McDonough, cello, just completed a year as one of New England Conservatory's student Honors Ensembles. Jupiter recently was chosen to become the third ensemble in NEC's Professional String Quartet Training Program, beginning this fall. Under the direction of Paul Katz, this program provides intensive training and coaching for exceptional groups that show the talent and commitment necessary to pursue a concert career.

Founded in Cleveland in 2001, Jupiter received a second prize and the Barenreiter Prize at the 2003 Young Concert Artists International Auditions and has been awarded fellowships to the Aspen Music Festival and the Yellow Barn Music Festival.

Largest in the nation, the Fischoff competition was founded in 1973 by Joseph E. Fischoff and the South Bend Chamber Music Society. Its purpose is to encourage young people to pursue chamber music study and performance. It annually attracts approximately sixty ensembles from more than twenty countries in both wind and string categories.
