Kathleen Rountree to head AMT editorial committee - American Music Teacher - Brief Article

MTNA President Dr. R. Wayne Gibson proudly announces the appointment of Dr. Kathleen Rountree as chair of the American Music Teacher editorial committee.

"Kathleen is eminently qualified to head the editorial committee," says Gibson. "She has held various positions within MTNA's leadership and is a fine educator. I am certain she will do an outstanding job with AMT."

Kathleen is dean of the College of Performing and Visual Arts at the University of Northern Colorado. Previously, she was associate dean in the College of Music and Dramatic Arts at Louisiana State University. She holds degrees from East Carolina University, Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville and The Florida State University, and has served on the faculties of Louisiana State University, Moorhead State University and Appalachian State University.

Her writings on piano literature and pedagogy have appeared in Clavier, American Music Teacher and Piano Quarterly. In addition, Kathleen is the editor of two piano anthologies published by Warner Publications. As a clinician, she has been featured in numerous settings, including MTNA state conventions in Florida, Mississippi, Minnesota and North and South Dakota, as well as the Wichita and New York MTNA National Conventions. She has performed across the U.S., Canada, Europe and Asia, and is featured on a CD of American music for flute and piano released in 1994 by Centaur Records.

AMT spoke with Kathleen about her thoughts and vision for the magazine:

"We are assembling what I believe will be an excellent editorial committee," says Rountree. The committee's main charge is to review manuscripts submitted for AMT for publication consideration. Within this charge is the responsibility for shaping the editorial content of the magazine.

"AMT constantly is challenged to provide information appealing to all its members--collegiate and independent, novice and experienced, piano and other instruments, performers and pedagogues," says Rountree. "As the official journal of MTNA, AMT is a vital source of information for the entire music community, covering current topics of interest in a broad spectrum of the musical experience. It includes business and organizational news of MTNA, information on activities and issues of MTNA's constituencies--IMTF, CFF, COE, FOUNDATION and others--news of the music industry, highlights of special honors and accomplishments in music, unique opportunities in workshops and meetings, and informative advertisements from businesses and universities who have invaluable offerings for music teachers and students.

"In addition to providing information, AMT provides inspiration and opportunities. In its pages, a reader will constantly find open doors; invitations to propose convention sessions, to volunteer for committee participation, to apply for a FOUNDATION grant. In its feature articles, the reader will experience the excitement of new research in performance and teaching, the inspiration of innovative music programs, the wisdom of leading scholars, and a thoughtful examination of topics new and old, innovative and traditional, widely accepted and controversial.

"The vision of AMT is to be a publication of the highest possible quality, containing information about current issues and trends in music teaching. The knowledge and ideas of many individuals are necessary to do that. I encourage individuals who think AMT should publish an article on a specific topic to take the initiative to research the topic and submit a proposed article."
