Interlochen names new president - Items of Interest - Brief Article

Jeffrey S. Kimpton has been elected president of Interlochen by the Interlochen Center for the Arts Board of Trustees.

Kimpton, 52, is the seventh president in the institution's seventy-six-year history and replaced Edward J. Downing, who recently retired.

Kimpton was director of the School of Music and professor of music education at the University of Minnesota before beginning his duties as Interlochen president in September. Kimpton holds bachelor's and master's degrees in music education and school administration from the University of Illinois and has a thirty-year record of achievement as a teacher, conductor, administrator and program developer in music and arts education.

He taught and administered music and arts education programs for fifteen years in public school districts and from 1988 to 1996, Kimpton served as director of institutional education at Yamaha Corporation of America. He was director of public engagement at the Annenberg Institute at Brown University from 1996 to 1999.
