American Music Teacher, Feb-March, 2003
At its December meeting, the Board of Directors approved a recommendation by the MTNA Diversity Task Force, which was charged with advising the MTNA Board of Directors of programs and services the association should establish to better meet the needs of minority music teachers.
The main thrust of the task force's recommendation is the development of partnerships with several organizations as a first step toward reaching minority music teachers. An implementation plan, including a direct mail campaign; regional workshops, seminars and master classes; and a presentation about MTNA at the DeBose National Piano Competition, was outlined. The various parts of the plan were prioritized by the Board of Directors and will be implemented by the MTNA staff.
The task force consists of Leon Bates, chair; Myrtle David, executive director of the DeBose Foundation; Jacqueline Faulcon, Delaware MTA president-elect; and Tobizena Williams. MTNA President R. Wayne Gibson, NCTM, and Executive Director Gary L. Ingle serve as ex officio members.
