American Music Teacher, Feb-March, 2004

Make Music Inc., 6210 Bury Dr., Eden Prairie, MN 55346-1718; (952) 937-9611, fax: (952) 937-9760; www.makemusic.com or www.smartmusic.com. Price varies.

MakeMusic! Inc. recently released SmartMusic Studio 8.1, the latest version of the company's award-winning interactive music practice system.

SmartMusic Studio 8.1 introduces support for strings with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements 2000 for Strings Book 1 and Suzuki Volumes 14 for Violin, Viola and Cello, as well as Volumes 1-3 for Double Bass. New titles for young band students include Hal Leonard's Essential Elements 2000 Book 2 and Alfred's Accent on Achievement Book 2.

Available to students and music educators through school sponsorship and home subscription offers, SmartMusic is acclaimed for its patented Intelligent Accompaniment feature that listens to musicians perform through a microphone attached to a computer and then follows their spontaneous tempo changes just as a skilled human accompanist would.

Students using SmartMusic can perform music and then immediately listen to how they sound via a CD-quality recording that can be e-mailed to patents and teachers or saved to disk as a permanent performance portfolio. With some method books, students' performances are assessed onscreen, with colored notes showing them what they did wrong and how to do it right. Student scores can be e-mailed automatically to their teachers.
