Scott McBride Smith

Irvine, California

Scott McBride Smith, NCTM, is president of the International Institute for Young Musicians and the Royal American Conservatory Examinations. He is coauthor of The Well-Tempered Keyboard Teacher and associate editor of Keyboard Companion. A member of the MTNA Board of Directors. he has given workshops throughout the world.

"I see three important challenges in the next biennium: 1 Offering improved services to attract younger members; 2. Continuing to serve the teachers of everyday' students and increasing outreach to teachers of different cultures and ethnicities and 3. Developing a national standard for students of independent teachers," he says.

WEST CENTRAL

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Diane Smith

West Des Moines, Iowa

Diane M. Smith, NCTM, maintains an independent piano studio and holds B.S. and B.A. degrees from Moorhead State University. She also founded and directed the Music and Movement Center, Inc. She has been active in her local association, holding a number of positions, including president. Diane has been active in the Iowa State MTA, serving in several capacities including president, secretary and FOUNDATION chain She chairs Iowa's MTNA Junior Competitions.

"MTNA has been an integral part in my professional growth. I am thankful to the members who have given so much to MTNA to make it a better organization," she says.

Janice Wenger

Columbia, Missouri

Janice Wenger, NCTM, is West Central Division president. A professor and keyboard faculty coordinator at the University of Missouri-Columbia, she holds degrees from Kansas State University, the Eastman School of Music and the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music. Janice was group piano chair for the West Central Division and Missouri MTA secretary and treasurer.

"MTNA's governing tiers have a responsibility to gather a broad range of information from the constituency--local, state, division and national membership, as well as leadership. The challenges for the music profession's future are numerous, and the national leadership has a responsibility to plan a strategy for MTNA's role in that future," she says.

PRESIDENT-ELECT

Thomas Ediger

Nebraska City, Nebraska

Thomas Ediger, NCTM, is director of choral activities and professor of music at Peru State College in Peru, Nebraska. He directs three choirs, teaches other music courses and maintains a private studio. Tom has been chair of MTNA's Composer Commissioning Program and the West Central Division Composition Contest. Active in the Nebraska MTA, he has served as composition chair, vice president, president-elect and president. He is the NMTA immediate past president.

"I am honored to be nominated for this office and, if elected, I promise to continue to work to help make MTNA one of the best music associations that can serve the needs of all teachers," he says.

Kathleen Hasse

Cologne, Minnestoa

Kathleen H. Hasse graduated from Concordia College and Minnesota State University, Studying with Paul Manz, Barbara Nymark, Thelma Noennig and Kim Kasling. She is Director of Worship, Music, and Arts and the School of Music at Trinity in Waconia, Minnesota, and also maintains a private piano studio. Kathleen has been Collegiate and Chamber Music coordinator for the West Central Division. She has been Minnesota MTA president, vice president of finance, treasurer and MMTA Foundation president.
