East Central Division - Division News - Michigan Music Teacher's Association - Brief Article

American Music Teacher, April-May, 2002 by Kathleen Murray

The East Central Division competitions and meetings were held at Michigan State University in East Lansing in January. Michigan MTA (MMTA) is growing with the addition of the North Central chapter, located in Gaylord, and the Grand Valley State University collegiate chapter in Allendale. These additions bring the total number of local associations to twenty-one and the collegiate chapters to eleven. Plans already are underway for two more new local associations.

MMTA is very proud of six of its members. Joanne Smith, nationally recognized piano pedagogue and past president of MMTA, has been selected as MTNA's Teacher of the Year. Natalie Matovinovic of Ann Arbor has been honored as an MTNA FOUNDATION Fellow. Eileen Keel of Lansing, also an MMTA past president, is the incoming East Central Division president. Jill Christian, NCTM, of Kalamazoo, another past president of MMTA, was the recipient of the state's Distinguished Service Award for her many contributions at the state level. Finally, Jerome and Betty Kowalsky Stasson, NCTM, of West Bloomfield are greatly appreciated for their diligence bringing about legislation making Michigan the only state to have zoning protection for in-home educational professionals.

You can learn more about what's happening in the MMTA by visiting their new website at www.mi-mtna.org.
