South Central Division - Division News - music teacher conventions - Brief Article

American Music Teacher,  April-May, 2002  by Melody Allen

What an exciting time to be an American Music Teacher! Being a part of Music Teachers National Association and specifically the South Central Division is such an honor. Sharing with teachers throughout the country is an inspiration. The national conference is always a time of "refreshment." And as each state plans its state conference, we start to gear up for a great time of exposition, development and recapitulation.

The Louisiana Music Teachers Association (LMTA) held its 50th annual convention in October 2001 at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond. The convention artists were pianist Arthur Greene from the University of Michigan and violinist Solomia Soroka. There was a repeat of last year's successful used music and books sale to benefit the MTNA FOUNDATION.

Arkansas Music Teachers Association (ASMTA) has commissioned Norman Boehm of Hendrix College to write a short work for solo piano. ASMTA also welcomes a new local association, the North Central Arkansas Music Teachers Association. The state's next convention will be May 31-June 1, 2002, at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

Oklahoma Music Teachers Association's state convention will be held May 31-June 1, 2002, at the University of Oklahoma in Norman. Clinicians will include Barbara Fast, NCTM, of the University of Oklahoma and Steven Betts, NCTM, of Southern Nazarene University, both new pedagogy faculty members at their respective universities and new to the state of Oklahoma.
