Southwest Division - Division News - Brief Article

American Music Teacher,  April-May, 2002  by Scott McBride Smith

The Southwest Division Executive Council and Council of Division Presidents meeting took place January 5 at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The discussion was frank, open and friendly. Here is a summary of some of the issues covered.

* Certification. Division Chair Susan Dersnah Fee, NCTM, has done an outstanding job of promoting this important professional component of MTNA membership. She reports growing numbers of applicants.

* Membership. Outgoing Division President Scott McBride Smith, NCTM, reported about continuing efforts to increase MTNA membership. State presidents shared recruitment ideas, including a new members luncheon, mentoring and establishing a separate state student recitals day apart from convention.

* State reports. I am happy to report that member states all are in good financial shape and continue to develop innovative programs to serve MTNA members and their students.

I would like to conclude this, my final message to you as Southwest Division president, on a note of appreciation. During my term, it has been a privilege and pleasure to work with our Division leadership team. Their creativity and strong sense of commitment to the MTNA ideals are inspiring. It has been an honor to serve.

--Scott McBride Smith, NCTM Southwest Division President Irvine, California
