American Music Teacher, April-May, 2003

Interlochen Center for the Arts is conducting an international search to replace President Edward J. Downing, who has announced his retirement.

The Interlochen Board of Trustees has issued a request to Interlochen's 83,000 alumni around the world to submit names of candidates for consideration.

Downing, 67, has been president since 1998 and is in his twenty-fifth year at Interlochen. His previous positions include vice president for education and director of Interlochen Arts Camp. He is only the sixth president in Interlochen's seventy-five-year history.

"We are exceptionally grateful for the dignified leadership provided by Ed Downing," said Scrub Calcutt, chair of Interlochen's Board of Trustees. "He will leave Interlochen having helped strengthen its position as a leader in arts education." Calcutt noted several highlights of Downing's tenure, including the completion of several building projects and the merger with the local Pathfinder School.

Nominations may be sent to search@interlochen.org. Nominations also may be addressed to James L. Tolley, 3959 Somerset Dr., Sarasota, FL 34242-1168.
