Southern Division - Division News - Music Teachers National Association competitions - Brief Article

American Music Teacher, April-May, 2003 by Roy Wylie

Thanks to all who helped with our recent Southern Division Competitions. A giant congratulations goes to Jeanette Winsor, NCTM, of Virginia, and her team: Don Speer, NCTM, Kentucky; Martha Thomas, Georgia; Lynn Rice-See, Tennessee; and Carol Schutzmann, NCTM, Mississippi. This is a giant undertaking, and we are fortunate to have such competent volunteers. Mississippi MTA and especially the Jones County MTA and the Hattiesburg Music Teachers League made our stay especially enjoyable! We can never say thank you enough.

Another special event on the horizon is Tennessee MTA's (TMTA) 50th Anniversary State Conference, June 7-10, 2003, in Nashville, where its first conference was held. The theme is "Celebrating TMTA: 50 Years of Excellence." The conference will consist of concerts of two-piano teams from Tennessee and the best of the state's commissioned works over the past fifty years: a session on TMTA history by Norma Seifert, NCTM; a celebration honoring the past Teachers of the Year; and demonstrations by outstanding TMTA teachers of pre-college students. In addition, former Tennessee residents Nancy and Randall Faber will present several sessions. It sounds so exciting! For more information, see tnmta.org.
