American Music Teacher, June-July, 2003
The International Association for Jazz Education (IAJE) will present two intensive two-day Teacher Training Institutes.
Funded in part by contributions from the BET Jazz Education Grant, the Institutes will be held June 19-21, 2003, at The American Jazz Museum in Kansas City, Missouri, and August 21-23, 2003, at Humber College in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
According to IAJE President David Baker, "The value placed on jazz education is at an all time high, thanks in part to the emphasis on improvisation in the National Standards for Music Education. The Institute program will provide a unique opportunity for teachers to work directly with an all-star faculty and develop skills and techniques they need to be effective jazz educators."
With a curriculum designed for general music, vocal, private piano and instrumental teachers at all levels, the institute faculty has been carefully selected to reflect a mix of grass roots educators, authors, collegiate pedagogues and performing jazz artists. Session topics will include teaching improvisation, coaching the jazz rhythm section, rehearsal techniques, building a jazz music library, starting, integrating and maintaining a jazz program, jazz history overview, technology and more.
MENC: The National Association for Music Education is co-sponsoring the Teacher Training Institutes.
