An announcement
National Interest, The, Summer, 2005 by Robert F. Ellsworth
June 1, 2005
To Our Readers:
This issue marks the 20th anniversary of The National Interest. Readers of the magazine will notice that there have been some changes--changes we think will help to rejuvenate and regenerate TNI and to preserve its unique voice for years to come.
For starters, TNI has a new editor--Nikolas Gvosdev. He is no stranger to the publication, its friends and its authors, having served as executive editor for the past four years. A Rhodes Scholar, he received his doctorate at Oxford University. At a young age (35), he has already authored several books, is a frequent contributor to leading newspapers and periodicals, and is a creative foreign policy thinker.
Under his leadership, TNI will not only continue to be open to differing points of view, but will actively solicit contributions designed to promote vigorous debate about American foreign policy. At the same time, TNI will not hesitate to weigh in on the issues of the day with its "Realist" editorials.
Now more than ever, we feel that TNI fills a unique niche by encouraging frank, analytical discussion of real foreign policy issues rather than engaging in ideological sniping and offering bumper-sticker cliches.
The new editor will be assisted by an advisory council chaired by former Secretary of Defense James Schlesinger. This high-profile, hi-partisan body, comprised of both distinguished practitioners and highly respected scholars, will help to define TNI's direction and ensure that its high standards are upheld. In addition, an impressive group of contributing editors has been assembled who bring their expertise and enthusiasm to the service of the magazine.
The world is far different today than it was when the magazine was founded, but no less dangerous and certainly more complex. The renewal of TNI ensures its capacity both to preserve the best of the past and to guarantee an open and thoughtful discussion of America's 21st-century opportunities and challenges.
