- Paid maternity leave and breastfeeding breaks in waged work

- No welfare reform that denies that 'every mother is a working mother' (US demand)

- Implementation of the UN decision to measure and value women's and men's unwaged work

Women applied these demands to their specific needs and to their ongoing campaigns: for example for land ownership, for welfare or pensions, and for other rights.

WITH REPORTS STILL COMING IN FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD, HERE SOME STRIKE ACTIONS:

* Peru: the Centro de Capacitacion para las Trabajadoras del Hogar marched through Lima with 5000 women.

* South Africa: the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) issued a statement supporting the Strike demands.

* Spain: Hundreds of women held a speak-out in Barcelona's main square and thousands marched through the city centre. Actions took place in Bilbao, Valencia, Zaragoza and many other cities.

* Burkina Faso: rural women struck to exist, demanding money for birth certificates! identity cards.

* India: village women struck against housework, in Jaipur, Ragard and Mahasmund women marched; 500 took the train and didn't pay to meet with government ministers in Delhi

* Argentina: the Housewives Union in Santa Fe, which demands 'pensions without contributions for workers without wages', held an open day at their centre.

* Ireland: Margaretta D'Arcy and singer Mary Coughlin got the Strike's theme song played on almost every radio station. At 11 am women stopped work for 10 minutes.

* Mexico: Las Hijas del Maiz held a jornada of discussion and fiesta in Mexico City. Many raised their support for indigenous women's self-determination.

* UK: In London, the Strike was launched by sex workers. Hiding their identity behind masks, they marched through the red-light area of Soho and held a press conference demanding justice

* US: Women in more than 50 cities supported the strike. Los Angeles: women protested welfare reform, lack of value for caring work[ldots]New York: a press conference at the office of lawyers representing victims of Pinochet[ldots]San Francisco: The City passed a resolution in support of the Strike .Philadelphia: The Wages for Housework Campaign supported by many other groups launched a 'Pay Equity Now!' campaign[ldots]"
