DaimlerChrysler AG's next step in cab-forward design, the Chrysler Java concept car, is smaller than VW's B-class Golf and larger than a typical A-class minicar. DaimlerChrysler Executive Vice President of Design Tom Gale says the new breed of crossover vehicle carves out new territory in terms of package efficiency.
At just 148 inches long, it's 20 inches shorter than the company's Neon-based PT Cruiser, yet it has more available interior volume than the PT. Penned by DC's Pacifica Advanced Product Design center in California, the Java has its wheels pulled to the absolute extreme ends of the car, on a 98.3-inch wheelbase, to further maximize cabin volume. The front-wheel-drive Java includes a Neon-derived 1.4L, 80hp four-cylinder. Look for production in 2002.
