Perceptron shines in Japan - Supplier Technology - paint finish - Perceptron Inc - Brief Article

Automotive Industries,  Nov, 2002  by John Peter

Perceptron Product Marketing Manager Paul Joss is on his way to Europe next month to sell the company's AutoSpect paint quality measurement system, and he's got his sales presentation down--just one slide with the Toyota logo on it.

Toyota has spent the last 18 months installing the system in eight paint lines in Japan and one in France and negotiations are underway to have the system installed in their North American plants as well. That's not a bad endorsement for an American supplier.

Perceptron has been supplying the industry with quality measurement systems since 1981. AutoSpect's laser based sensors measure paint for gloss, orange peel and the distinction of the reflected image without coming in direct contact with the surface.

"There are other systems, but none can give an objective scale for measuring paint quality," says Sr. Vice President. Bill Corriveau. In fact, the AutoSpect scale of paint appearance developed in the 1990s has been adopted as an industry standard for measuring finishes.

The new AutoSpect system uses solid state lighting and a new web-based platform that allows for access to data from anywhere in the world via the internet. Toyota can now monitor every car painted in every plant to make sure they all meet the same specifications. Corriveau says that Toyota has also found a way to be proactive with the system using it to alert them when it's time to change the solvent blend.
